Mathieu Desbiens, Firehole ambassador

I've been fly fishing since 2014 and tying my own flies since 2015. Over the years, I've developed a serious passion (some might call it an obsession!) for Euro nymphing and the technical side of fly fishing.

I've also enjoyed the competitive side of the sport, participating in several local competitions and the 2018 Canadian Fly Fishing Championships.

These days, when I'm not out fishing, I love sharing my passion through fly-tying clinics, classroom presentations, and hands-on Euro-nymphing workshops on the river. There's nothing quite like helping someone improve their skills and enjoy the sport as much as I do!

Fly Tying Experience

Years Tying Flies: Since 2015

What started as a curiosity quickly became a passion of its own. I spend countless hours behind the vise experimenting with materials, hook shapes, bead weights, and new variations of proven patterns.

How You Got Started

My journey into fly tying began with the desire to create my own flies. I enrolled in a fly-tying course with the Moucheurs du Montréal Métropolitain (MMM), a local fly-fishing club in Montreal.

What started as a simple desire to tie my own patterns quickly developed into a genuine passion. I became fascinated by the creativity, precision, and technical aspects of fly tying, especially the satisfaction of catching fish on flies I had tied myself.

Today, I've come full circle. What began with me attending a fly-tying class has evolved into me teaching fly-tying clinics and sharing that same passion with other anglers.

Favorite Pattern to Tie

One of my absolute favorite patterns is my personal variation of the Gasolina Perdigon. I was first introduced to the original pattern during a training session with David Arcay, three-time World Fly Fishing Champion. Over time, I combined elements of that fly with another successful pattern I had been using in Quebec. The result has become one of my most productive and reliable Euro-nymphing flies.

Favorite Species & Waters

Target Species: Brown and rainbow trout, and Atlantic salmon
Favorite Waters to Fish: The rivers of Quebec and the Adirondacks in upstate New York

I particularly enjoy technical rivers where reading currents, controlling the drift, and selecting the right fly make all the difference. I also have a strong passion for Atlantic salmon fishing in Quebec's beautiful salmon rivers.

Fly Tying Style & Specialties

My tying style is heavily influenced by European competition fly fishing, with a strong emphasis on Euro-nymphing patterns and also Spanish dry flies. I particularly enjoy tying Perdigons, jig nymphs, and other weighted patterns designed to sink efficiently, maintain a natural drift, and perform consistently in different water conditions.

I believe that a great fly doesn't necessarily have to be complicated. Simplicity, durability, proper proportions, and the right hook and bead combination are what matter most to me.

Why You Trust Firehole

What initially attracted me to Firehole was the company's commitment to quality barbless hooks, something that perfectly aligns with my catch-and-release philosophy. As both an angler and an instructor, I believe the equipment we use should reflect our respect for the fish and the environment.

Gear & Bench Setup

I use a Renzetti Traveller vise, and I'm particularly fond of Marc Petitjean tools, especially his bobbin holder.

Fun Fact

I spent 11 years living and traveling around the world, including 5 years in Hokkaido, Japan, 3 years in Florida, and 2 years in Colorado. Some of the most incredible fly-fishing destinations you could ask for, right? Well, here's the funny part... I never cast a single fly in any of those places! I only discovered fly fishing after moving back home to Quebec.
