What Firehole Hook Replaces the One You Already Tie On?

Most tyers come to Firehole already loyal to a hook. A TMC 100 for dries. A Mustad C49S for scuds. A jig they have bought by the thousand. The question is never "is this a good hook." The question is "which one of yours does it stand in for, and where does it not."

This chart answers that. It is the first cross-reference that puts Firehole next to the hooks you already know, model by model, and tells you plainly where the match is exact and where it is only close.

How to read it

Direct. A true equivalent. Same gap, same wire class, same bend. Tie the pattern you already tie on it and nothing changes but the barb.

Approximate. The closest cousin, not a clone. Maybe the gap runs a touch wider, the wire a shade heavier, the shank a hair longer. Still the right hook for the same flies, but worth knowing the difference before you order a thousand. Most cross-brand matches live here. Two companies rarely forge the exact same wire, and the difference is worth knowing.

Firehole Original. We drew it first. For a handful of models there is no hook to replace because the design started here. Some have been copied since. A few are still one of a kind. Where a close cousin exists we name it, but the credit is ours.

A word on the barb, since it is the whole point. Every Firehole hook is manufactured barbless. It is not a barbed hook with the barb ground off at the factory, and it is not you pinching one down with pliers at the vise. It comes out of the die that way. When you cross from a barbed hook to its Firehole equivalent, that is the trade you are making: a cleaner point, an easier release, and the pattern sits the same.

For standard dries, nymphs, scuds, and buggers, the matches are close and you can cross over without thinking hard. For the jigs and the predator hooks, we built our own geometry, so several models have no true equivalent, only a nearest cousin. We name the nearest cousin and tell you it's a cousin. Better that than a match that is not really there.
