Jeff is the owner and author of TroutStrike.com, a resource dedicated to the technical and tactical side of modern fly fishing. A longtime educator and current school principal, he brings the same analytical focus from the classroom to the limestone streams of Central Pennsylvania. He is passionate about tightline and Euro nymphing but considers himself an all-around angler who fishes year-round.

How You Got Started:

I first picked up fly tying as a teenager with a basic kit and a manual that was about as helpful as IKEA instructions. For years, my journey was inconsistent. I would get frustrated because I tried to learn a massive variety of individual patterns all at once without ever mastering a single style. It felt more like a chore than a hobby, and I ended up quitting several times.

What changed everything for me was finally taking the advice to view flies in terms of styles rather than a scattered list of patterns. I recommitted to tying consistently and focused on mastering a narrow group of core flies by tying them repeatedly. That shift made the process enjoyable and directly improved my success on the water. Now, as an educator, I am even more passionate about the creation process. I love using photography and video to help other anglers skip that frustration and learn the technical side of fly tying.

Fly Tying Style & Specialties

I spend a lot of time tightline nymphing and focus on a narrow selection of confidence flies. I tie and sell the same patterns that I fish with every day. Instead of constantly switching to a new fly, I prefer to have my core patterns in a wide range of hook and bead sizes. This allows me to keep the same profile while I adjust the weight to match the water I am fishing. I really encourage other anglers to worry less about the specific pattern and focus more on the mechanics of the drift.

Gear & Bench Setup 

At the tying bench, I rely on a select group of materials that help me maintain consistency across my confidence patterns. I use a wide range of Firehole hooks and tungsten beads because they allow me to precisely adjust the weight of my flies for different water conditions. For my technical nymphs, I often use Semperfli Nano Silk thread for its strength and slim profile, along with their specialized wires and body materials. I also depend on a Montana Mongoose rotary vise and sharp, fine point scissors to handle the detailed work on smaller hook sizes. These products are the foundation of every fly I tie and fish. 

Fun Fact

The first “fly” I ever tied was a yellow piece of fuzz on a hook to represent the corn I used as a kid bait fishing for trout with my dad. I would chum them up with corn and then fish the “fly.” What can I say? It was effective! My dad still teases me to this day asking me if I am still using “corn flies.”
